YOUR CRISP AND PITHY RESPONSE TO COP26

Dear Associates,

I have been asked to offer an article on the COP26 conclusions. So I’m seeking to garner and refashion some 800 words based on responses in our CCMJ and Global Table network to the critical Conference opening tomorrow.

This is for ‘Signs of The Times’ a periodical of Modern Church.

Would you be prepared to offer your own crisp and pithy response that I can refashion within a composite representation of agreements and disagreements on ‘where we need to go from here’? In just 2 or 3 vital sentences please? I’d need your pithy piece by the end of November to get the article in for editorial consideration by mid-December.

A GLOBAL COSMOLOGY EXPRESSED ON EARTH. – Your response will be valued and woven into a collaborative reflection at what is probably earth’s most intense cross-road, its transition, its crossing either to lifelessness or to a renewed natural livelihood in realised symbiosis.

A recent headline:’1.5C. is still possible, but requires drastic emissions cuts in the next 10 years as well as a long-term goal of net zero carbon. Sir Patrick Vallance, the UK’s chief scientific adviser, said: “It needs action now … A clear roadmap is needed.” Is this suggestion facing up to a vital symptom in a valid palliative way, or is it also? the opening up of a route to the root humanly devised and persistently encultured cause of earth’s distress?  Distress caused by structures that encourage Usury, Theft of the Commons and Institutional structures of ‘power over’ rather than of respectful co-operation?

I hope you are well and your diligent studies and actions being heeded widely on fundamental structural redesign being planned. Yours in shared trusteeship of this sacred planet.
Peter

Continued – 4th November 2021:

Dear Associates,
If, in response to my earlier request, you are intending to offer two or three sentences of crisp and pity comment post cop 26, for an inclusion in an 800 word message, you might find disturbing evidence in the drafting by one group of an alternative opening speech by Boris Johnson – It is a deeply disturbing read in all its details of frightening global symptoms:

United Nations (UN) Secretary-General António Guterres in his opening remarks at the start of the World Leaders Summit of the COP26. “It’s time to say ‘enough.’ Enough of brutalizing biodiversity. Enough of killing ourselves with carbon. Enough of treating nature like a toilet. Enough of burning and drilling and mining our way deeper. We are digging our own graves…”

How does any faith in the earth’s positive creativity first react and then actively respond to our being so far down the wrong road. What was the alternative choice at the last major crossroad some centuries past?

Did the human race take the road on which the inevitable and incessant interaction of USURY, THEFT OF THE EARTH’S FREELY GIVEN WEALTH and INSTITUTIONAL ARROGANCE take us in the exploitative direction of today’s grim destination?

How can we describe a new road that we must take in which BOTH many palliatives AND a major curative are pursued; in which the pastoral and the prophetic inter-act; in which we consume less and grow more?

Yours crisp and pithy contribution, please.

Peter
